Introduction

His company processed whole trees into lumber and sold the finished product both within Georgia and to customers in other states. Darby, however, paid his workers less than the minimum wage and failed to pay overtime, both violations of the FLSA. The federal government sued Darby to enforce the law.
The Lower Court Ruling
The United States District Court for the Southern District of Georgia sided with Darby, ruling that the FLSA was unconstitutional. The court reasoned that manufacturing was not inherently interstate commerce, even if the goods produced were later sold across state lines. Since Darby’s employees worked solely within Georgia, the court argued that Congress overstepped its authority in attempting to regulate their employment. The indictment against Darby was dismissed.
The Supreme Court Decision
The federal government, believing the lower court misinterpreted the scope of the Commerce Clause, appealed the case directly to the United States Supreme Court.
